How HCL Technologies Started

In 1976, Shiv Nadar and a group of six engineers started a company concentrated on manufacturing personal computers. It was incorporated as a technology development service under the name HCL Overseas Limited on 12 November 1991.

In 1994, the company was renamed HCL Consulting Limited and eventually to HCL Technologies Limited in October 1999 for a better reflection of its activities.

HCL Technologies developed the first indigenous micro-computer in 1978 and a fine-grained UNIX multi-processor in 1988.

The company increased its software development capabilities to US, European, and APAC markets between 1991 and 1999.

In 2017, HCL Technologies announced the launch of its Next Generation Research Platform (NGRP), a pre-competitive drug-discovery ecosystem built with open standards.

In 2019, HCL Technologies took full ownership of research and development, sales, marketing, delivery, and support for AppScan, BigFix, Commerce, Connections, Digital Experience (Portal and Content Manager), Notes Domino, and Unica.

In 2022, the company announced its plans to expand its partnership with hyper scalers, entered into an agreement with DSM to drive the modernization of DSM’s core IT business systems and transition to a product-based IT operating model, and announced the launch of the VMware business unit.
